During last 40 years FC Barcelona has always won the Spanish Cup every of the four times since then that the year had finished with number “8”: 1968, 1978, 1988 and 1998! This year is 2008 and the big question is: will Barcelona maintain fidelity to the statistics and will win the Spanish Cup? It is not easy to give the correct answer because although the sequences of numbers, football never has been a reliable game in any aspect.
Anyway and until now the performance of FC Barcelona in the Spanish Cup this season, although has not been spectacular, it is at least in the right way to obtain the trophy: 6 matches played in total, against Alcoyano from Second Division B in last 32 phase (0-3 and 2-2); against Sevilla in last 16 phase (1-1 and 0-0) and against Villarreal in last 8 phase (0-0 and 1-0). Total 4 draws and 2 wins.
Now FC Barcelona is only 3 matches far to become champion: two leg semi-final phase in front of Valencia (February 27 in Camp Nou and March 19 in Mestalla Stadium) and, if winner, then the final match, probably in Madrid on April 16, against the winner of the other semi-final between Getafe and Racing Santander.
So in about 10 weeks we will know if FC Barcelona knows to play in favour of the statistics.
The tottering basketball of Barcelona
Basketball team from FC Barcelona seems to be installed on something similar to an switchback. This season the team is able to obtain the best and alternatively the worst. After a tottering start the team was able to lead for a short time both the Euroleague and the domestic ACB League. But some defeats in the last matches played have put in doubt this last project from the coach Ivanovic. The coach from Serbia, well known by his strong character seems unable to obtain the maximum profit of one team for which their budget is one of the most high of the European basketball. Last weekend in the last ACB League match that Barcelona plays against DKV Joventut, one of the most relevant teams this season, it looks like Barcelona was going up on the switchback. The team performed one of the best matches this season and the supporters who full up the Palau enjoyed at last with an exiting basketball match. And one name was over any other one – Roger Grimau. The Catalan escort played a complete match and if Barcelona wants to fight for one of the three major tittles of the season – Euroleague, ACB League and Spanish Cup – he can become the “key player” for the last round of the season.
